Moffitt Wins in Photo Finish at Michigan

Brett Moffitt won Saturday’s Corrigan Oil 200 at Michigan International Speedway. Moffitt battled Johnny Sauter down the front stretch on the final lap and beat him by half a truck length at the line.

John Hunter Nemechek led the field to green but due to the drafting that comes into play at Michigan there was no pulling away. The lead would be swapped four different times in the first 20 lap stage between Nemechek, Noah Gragson, Todd Gilliland, and Stewart Friesen. Friesen led the last seven laps of the stage and claimed the win.

Moffitt was the only driver not to pit and he assumed the lead. When stage 2 got underway Moffitt lost his lead to Grant Enfinger on the first lap under green. The following lap Matt Mills backed into the wall, bringing out the caution. The green came back out with seven to go but the caution flew again when Chris Fontaine had a nearly identical wreck to Mills’. The stage ended with a one lap shootout, Enfinger beat teammate Myatt Snider in a side by side battle to win.

Matt Crafton stayed out and was the leader as the final 60-lap stage got under way. Gragson reclaimed the lead with 37 laps to go. Pitstops began when Crafton pitted with 30 to go. As the cycle of stops was nearing an end Snider spun off turn 4 with 22 to go causing a caution.

Gragson still lead on the race’s final restart with 17 to go. Gilliland took the lead the following lap before losing it to Sauter a lap later.

Moffitt rode in Sauter’s shadow for 12 laps and when they took the white flag he dropped back significantly in order to get a push from third place Nemechek. Moffitt drove deep into turn 3 and got to Sauter’s inside which allowed him to get side by side off of 4 and side draft to the line to claim the win.
