Kyle Larson claimed victory in Saturday’s Overtons 300 in the Xfinity Series at Chicagoland Speedway. The story of the race revolved around the heat as the outside temperature was in the 90’s and driver cockpits were in the 150’s.
Pole sitter Larson was forced to start at the rear due to a flat tire after qualifying. This meant Tyler Reddick would lead the field to green. Reddick owned the first 45 lap stage. He was passed by Daniel Suarez on lap 13 but he got back around him 12 laps later and went on to win the stage.
Reddick suffered trouble in the pits and fell outside of the top 10, giving the lead to Kevin Harvick. He couldn’t hold the lead on the restart though as Christopher Bell got by quickly. Harvick remained close and with 19 to go in the stage he attempted to take the lead back but as he did Kyle Larson flew by both of them on the outside. Larson hopped out to a four second lead and won the stage with ease.
The final stage began just prior to halfway with Larson still out front. The first non-stage caution flew quickly when Jeb Burton and Ryan Reed tangled in turn 4, collecting Reddick as well. The yellow came out again a few laps later for debris.
The final restart was with 80 laps to go, Chase Briscoe was the leader after not pitting under caution. Harvick got the lead back but once again couldn’t outpace Larson. The 42 was back out front with 69 to go and commanded the rest of the race from there.
