Blaney Wins Event Filled Texas Race

Ryan Blaney won Saturday’s My Bariatric Solutions 300 at Texas Motor Speedway in the NASCAR XFINITY Series. It was Blaney’s 7th career XFINITY Series victory and his first on 2018. This win was also the third in a row for the Penske 22 team with three different drivers.

Blaney led the field to the green flag and quickly established a lead in turn 1. Trouble began early as Chad Finchum spun on lap 2 bringing out the race’s first caution. The following restart was short lived as Jamie McMurray slid through the infield grass after getting loose off turn 4. Cautions bred cautions and the next green flag run was short lived again as Vinnie Miller hit the wall on lap 16. The cautions ended there and Blaney would lead all 45 laps and win the first stage.

After pit stops Blaney retained the lead and held it as stage 2 got underway. Unlike stage 1 this stage got off to relatively calm start. Tyler Reddick and Ryan Reed made significant contact on the backstretch early on but both were able to continue. Halfway through the stage Spencer Gallagher crashed on the front stretch after getting loose under Reed in turn 4. On the ensuing restart Blaney wiggled in turn 1 and surrendered the lead to Christopher Bell. Finchum’s day went from bad to worse as he backed into the wall extremely hard with 11 laps to go in the stage. A caution so late in the stage allowed a few teams to play the strategy game. While most of the field pitted a handful of guys, led by Brandon Jones and Ryan Reed, stayed out. The stage restarted with 1 lap remaining and Brandon Jones was able to capture his first career stage victory.

The remaining drivers hit pit road following the stage and Daniel Hemric cycled to the lead. Brandon Jones was deep in the field on the restart and his luck quickly turned sour. On the first green flag lap of the final stage he slapped the wall and slid down the front stretch collecting Ryan Sieg in the process. After the race went back green Hemric held the led for a decent stretch until 68 laps to go. That’s when Blaney was able to get back by and retake the lead. He would proceed to lead the rest of the way as the caution flag wouldn’t fly again.
